Bukchon Hanok Viliage

The name Bukchon literally translates as “northern village,”

and is surrounded by Gyeongbokgung Palace, Changdeokgung

Palace and Jongmyo Shrine, and it lies north of two significant

Seoul landmarks the Cheonggyecheon Stream and the Jongno

area. The area was originally inhabited by high-ranking government

officials and their families. Nobility lived in hanok, traditional

homes that were built in a specific architectural style, designed

to maintain balance with the surrounding topography and were

generally constructed using elements such as long, curved roofs

and ondol flooring that helped keep the homes warm in the winter.
